My brother and I took our kids on our annual fishing trip and this years destination was Algonquin Park. We left May 25 and returned on May 29. It took us 6 hours of portaging and paddling to reach our lake . The longest portage was 2200 meters and the kids all carried full packs. This is our seventh annual trip and with the kids getting bigger ,single carries on the portage’s is becoming easier on the Dads. The fishing was tougher than I thought it would be but we caught enough fish to feed ourselves and release many more. We caught 29 specks between us and had hot weather with no rain so it made for easy living and camping. Since we were in better shape and travelling lighter we packed out in just under 5 hours.

It was a great trip. The odd thing about the fishing was we caught all fish while trolling except one caught casting. We usually have the person in the bow casting and the paddler trolls . Most fish were caught 40 to 50 meters offshore and sometimes while crossing a lake. On other spring trips we catch most casting. We were a week later and it was warm enough to swim so maybe that was the difference.

To FISHING WITH FRANKIE. We don’t take a fish finder into the park but several times during our trip I’d get curious and plumb the depth by dropping down a lure. It was usually between 10 to 15 feet of water but our EGB’S or Cleo’s were only flatlined behind a slow paddled canoe so I would guess they were running 4 to 6 feet down.Like Drew was saying in one of his posts you would feel the specks swipe at the lure but not hook up. We couldn’t use bait in the lake we were fishing so that wasn’t an option to increase hookups. Hope this helps.
