9 rods? lol

Based on my experience with generally fishing around all inclusive type places, I would say look for structure on the beach - those rock piers they sometimes have, that sort of thing. Any lights on the water at night can also be good.

Probably also want to try the stereotypical early morning/sunset fishing on more open water.

If you're at an all inclusive can try asking the main restaurant for some raw shrimp or squid at a slow time in the day.

hi there,

i can share my experience from last year. poor one at that, but if interested in details, keep reading.

i've been staying at barcelo solimar resort and only fished in walking distance:

- one morning from the beach (facing the ocean): @ 6 am on the beach, go in the water till waist or so, enough to keep the reel above water and launch as far as you can. the rep told me that on the beach side there are chances for barracudas and he recommended a white "rapala" (cranckbait). got nothing. the water is so clear probably the cudas were seeing me 2 km away. interesting experience though. in april when i was, water was about 28C

- one afternoon fishing facing the bay. i was a bit more prepared for that, gave 3 CUC to a cook (see what i did there ?) and he gave a dozen shrimp. For this I had some bites, but smart me thought that the fish are huge and brought hooks size 1 and up. Too big. Shrimp meat is also really soft and i found that fish (on the small side) were eating the shrimp around the hook (or the meat disintegrated in a really interesting pattern ). if you search "cuba varadero fishing" you'll find some tripadvisor reports with few preferred places; this is the spot i tried. Avoid choppy water, makes it hard to spot the bites, if you'll use one. And go when the tide is up.

you have some other options too: talk to your rep, if he's a fisherman, he may offer to take you with him (he'll expect something in return probably, you'll figure it out). or talk to "sailors" on the beach. talk to him to take you out for an hour, in the hobbie cats, probably 20 CUC will do. Decide for yourself based on how much time you want to spend on it (or your family will allow you)

enjoy.

I headed to Cuba Saturday. Got a four piece rod and bringing hooks and small amount of tackle. Seen a guy fishing there last year so I want to give it a try.
