They havent even got any tagged perch released yet . I keep hearing on the radio they need people to bring in live perch so they can tag them.

Hey Richby; Did you hear this on a local radio station about waiting for perch to be brought in to tag ??

This is a major event for Orillia , I find it hard to believe that there would not be 60 tagged perch in the swim at the derby open today .. Surely the organizers would ensure the prizes are avaliable from day one ??

Perhaps someone from the derby officials can answer this ..

This is not the first year this has happened but they usually have the big cash ones tagged .

Yes its been on kicks 106 every day all week. Doug Bunker? the organizer has been calling in and giving updates every day. They are asking for people to bring in perch approx 10" to be tagged to the blue beacon ... Every 10 perch you bring in they put your name in a draw for 100$ worth of fishing gear ...

Still not convinced re the tagged perch in the swim ??

Hey ; If I have to take 10 ,10" perch in for a "Chance" at a draw of $100 of tackle ..Not going to happen..They would go home for supper ..not a " Chance"

I'm going with my original post .. assuming there are 60 tagged fish in the swim up for grabs ..

not sure where they are launching from, only 2 places I know of in the narrows old Harris boat launch off of orchard Pt, and Blue Beacon, only see a few boats out, I was still ice locked as of yesterday, but wide open to Strawberry island, to cold for the bite unless warm water in close by the docks and shallows, heck I cant even find the smelts again?

smelts? where's the minnows (and don't say the bait shop) that's always my sign the perch are in, plus then I don't have to pay up to 10 bucks for a dozen minnows when walleye and pike season opens

Hi All,
I'm bringing a child out fishing for the first time from Toronto on Thursday and really really hoping he catches some perch so he get hooked (pun intended lol).
We are using a inflatable boat with trolling motor.

Any suggestions where would be good place to try at Orilla?

I've never fished here so its all a new to me.

Any suggestions is appreciated.

I'd be very careful about having a child out in a small vessel at this time of year. Cold water is very dangerous and the water is still VERY cold. Weekend winds dont look great either.

IMO Stay close to shore if you have to go or find a smaller lake.

Hey TorontoSteve,

Be safe, Lake Simcoe will turn on you quick. Especially because as you stated "you have never fished there". I have seen it go from glass to swells in a very short period.

As for "places to try" follow the herds. Perch are plentiful. So if your goal is to get on some fish for the Child you are bringing that shouldn't be to difficult. Finding the Jumbos is a different story. A child doesn't care how big the fish is only the person taking them does.
