Had a lake in my head to go try for a few years now, on the bucket list, (stocking list too). Was after getting home from work today, so I was kinda in a crunch for time, but couldn't decide whether to take canoe, or atv. Canoe would mean lots of portaging/bushwalking. Atv would mean easier trip in, but only shore fishing. So I opted for the atv, and figured on more of a scouting mission, to perhaps see about bringing canoe there another time.

Drive for a while from my place, and then another while in ATV. upon arrival, I find an old canoe in the bush, and have to improvise with a slab of cedar from a downed tree as a paddle. (No life jacket, of course, which I don't recommend)....anyhow, after a brief tour trolling one end of the lake, I decide to switch spoons, to one which I have a red-feather treble hook on.(has proven good for lakers/specks & whities too through the ice).

Fire it out, and a few paddle strokes later, I get a hit, and set the hook. ... feels pretty decent...started getting it close to the canoe after a bit.... and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...taking drag....I'm watching where my line enters the water, and it's zooming across the little lake toward the other side...can't say I've had a speck run like that before. Of course, usually they're half the size! Trolled around the whole lake for another hour and a half, but not another sign of a fish.

the batteries in my scale are dead, but using the girth(12.5") x girth, x length(18") divided by 800 formula for trout, it comes out at 3.5 lbs. Ties my personal best, which I caught in Algonquin years ago.

Yeah, look at the little head on that fish....I feel like it's a fairly young fish that grew super quick due to abundant food sources (bugs/minnows) in the lake. It's like it's body outgrew it's head 2:1.
