Hi all

Was out on the boat yesterday and when I had it full out the engine started cutting out. Never died but lost power. I pulled to shore and noticed a small gas slick. I checked the fuel line from the tank to the engine and everything checked out. Went around to the back of the engine and pulled the top off it. Ran my hands where I could along the fuel line inside the engine. It's pretty tight in there so I couldn't run my hand along the whole line but my hand was dry and I didn't see any gas pooling in the engine. I pumped the outer fuel line a bit and noticed gas coming out of a small opening on the left side ( standing behind the engine ) below the trim switch on the engine. Maybe 1/2 a centimeter wide. It has threads on the outside which makes me think it may have a cap that came off? Anyone know what that little opening is and what the problem might be? I'll try to get a pic of the little opening I'm talking about.

Thanks for any info

I tried to check if my 30 has a similar port on it but it doesn't. Have you tried checking out the motors manual? They usually have diagrams detailing each of the external pieces and detail what they are for.

Thanks for checking Elrick. I also checked 2 90hps and a 9hp and they don't have it either. Don't have the original manual as it wasn't new when we got it. Tried finding it online but haven't had much luck with a manual that shows great detail of that part of the engine.

Hey NP

I have a 1999 Merc 40 4 stroke on my boat and it and the 50 are very similar.

I have been looking at your picture and at my motor and I'm having trouble orienting things. I cannot see anything like your fitting on my motor.

Is the shroud still on your motor or have you removed it to get that picture?

Can you take a picture from further back and point in the area of the fitting?

A few years ago, I decided to change my own impellor. On the 4 strokes it is different to get the bottom end off than it is with a 2 stroke. On the 4 there is a release clip right up under the engine that you have to release to get the bottom end and the drive shaft off. The only way I figured out where it was, was through a mechanics manual I found for the 40. It was on a website "boatinfo". Have you looked for a manual there?

Hi SDC

I attached a pic of roughly where it would be located on my motor. I didn't remove anything to take the other pics. Just trimmed up the motor. I check a few other mercs and they don't seem to have it either.

I think that is simply a drain hole.

The fuel leak could be from carb overflow if some debris was stuck in the carb, like this video.

Hi NP

I don't have a fitting like that on my motor. what year is your motor?

I think the "boatinfo" site is your best bet for help. I got the face page to come up,but yesterday I couldn't get into any of the mechanics manuals?
