Knuguy and I headed up to the park this morning for a quiet day of bass fishing - hah! The lake was pretty busy with several canoe parties and fellow back lake anglers, something I found somewhat surprising for early in the week. On the way in, we met up with two other anglers who reported a slow day but we were able to figure out a pattern early on and got on to a few good fish. Knuguy landed three: BF caught on a crankbait sitting on the surface in 20+ fow, the other two on a Texas rigged Senko. I went 1 for 3 on a wacky rigged Senko cast into a mess of submerged tree branches. My fish was third in size weighing in at a measely 2.6 lb. With the exception of Harold's 4+ pounder, fish were caught shallow around laydowns or submerged timber. My first time to this lake but it won't be my last!

Apparently not; he wants to go out and do it again next week. Harold's on a roll -- a PB bass yesterday and, the trip before that, a PB pike.

Iím no expert by any means but itís to my understanding that dark fish coloration is due to clear water and the fish spending a lot of time in the sun kinda like people who spend a lot of time in the sun
In my experience all fish from deep water or spend little time shallow are very light in color I could be way off but thatís just what Iíve seen through the years
Hell of a bass thatís for sure

Thx for posting that, M.K.!

Catching that fish was a total blast. For the first hr or so I had tied on my 'go-to' lure, a cray pattern Big O, but had no luck. I switched over to a Hot n'Tot, cast it well behind the canoe and reached for my paddle to get the canoe moving again. Before I could reach my paddle I heard a big splash, grabbed the rod and knew right away that it was a good fish. Then it was a matter of time, patience and luck to wait out it's auditions for the National Ballet as well as deep sea diving techniques. Luckily, I had an experience net man in MK, who demonstrated finesse in shoveling it aboard!

The pic below should give a better indication of its size---we had to take an obligatory shot with outstretched arms!

Re color---I have seen quite black bass pulled out of G Bay. This lake has a couple of quite deep holes too.

The water is not particularly clear so I don't think it's a suntan.

Not quite a DB pose---I would need a cap on backwards and an ear-to-ear grin!!

Now that the cat is out of the bag re location, I would recommend it as a destination for all those who don't mind hordes of black flies, deer flies, and dodging bears on the portages!! (jes jokin', but I do recommend that you wear protection!
