I took a week of holidays at the cottage to do some fishing and relaxing with family and friends. There is mainly smalmouth and lake trout with the occasional bonus pike thrown in for fun. The water warmed up from 74 degrees on June 30 to 84.5 degrees surface temp. on July 7. The fishing on our lake was slow at first but improved as the week went on. One day we took two canoes and bushwhacked into a bass lake I Ďve never fished before. The fishing was good as my son and I landed 9 largemouth in a couple hours on cotton Cordell crankbaits. I donít fish for largemouth often ..........they sure are great fighters. My son was determined to catch a laker on our cottage lake with an old banjo wire line rig a retired fishing friend gave him. The man is like a grandfather to him and loves seeing someone use his retired fishing gear. The banjo rod is 65 years old and is simple but it works well. It took my son three days of trolling alone in his little tinny but he got his lake trout .Iíve never seen him prouder of a fish!! Fishing teaches kids so many good life lessons that Iím surprised itís not taught in school.Heres a few pics of the different fish.

Always wondered what those rods were called. I was given one by a neighbour whose husband passed away and still has the steel line on it. and great fish! those will be lifetime memories

Sounds like a great holiday. I think it's great that the old boy sent his wire line rig along up to the cottage for your son to use and I find it awesome that your boy was so excited to try it out. Glad that he put so much time into catching a Laker on it! Good for him.
