Things are very quiet here on the hunting page. So here is my post to "freshen up" things on the hunting forum.

Well it's spring time and I've got this incredible itch to purchase another firearm. And "yes" I really want it, and "No" I really don't need it. (Hunting and gun enthusiasts know the feeling.) I'm looking at the Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather SS in a 7MM-08 calibre. It looks sweet. As for the calibre, this is a big change for me. Most of my guns are magnums... and I love the feeling of shooting a magnum. However, this time I thought I would try a light shooting calibre for a change, and to give my shoulder a rest at the shooting range. If anyone has any thoughts on my purchase please express them. Love this forum, and thanks for your thoughts in advance.

I'm sure there'll be a "sh$t" load of opinions about this caliber,... The manufacturer I'd leave to those that own the brand.
It's a sweet caliber for deer. Sometimes being referred to as a "ladies gun" because of the lower recoil. If you're hunting here in southern Ontario, the caliber is well suited to our shorter range shots -- not those of a longer/flat shooter for mule deer in Alta/B.C., for example. (Check the ballistics charts here.)
I was seriously looking at this caliber for last fall's deer season. And after entering the muzzleloader hunt/purchase for this fall, a 7mm-08 is probably next.

As for the manufacturer and the model, I am not planning on spending a lot of cash on this purchase. I already own two pricey SAKO's , that incidentally shoot sub MOA. I am looking for an all-around relatively inexpensive rifle that will get the job done in southern Ontario where my expected range will be under 100 metres.. Not looking to buy my dream gun. That will by my next purchase.... maybe a Kimber.

The 7mm-08 is close to the 30-06 ballistic wise. The big difference is that the 08 is a short cartridge which means a lighter gun to carry around and it has a lighter felt recoil than the 06. For deer hunting and paper punching I don't think you can go wrong with the 7mm-08.

I'm not sure of the price difference involved but I would have thought somebody with a pair of sakos already would be into a tikka t3 for a less expensive rifle. Myself I was just having the same conversation with my buddy about wanting my next rifle to be in the 7mm range and I was thinking either tikka t3 or browning x bolt myself.. Again I'm not sure where they stand price wise VS a model 70 all weather but it with the history behind that model I don't think you can possibly go wrong!

Hello my friend Cousinhippy. You are 100% on track when it comes to gun selection. A Tikka T3 would be on my list of guns to purchase except that I already have a wonderful T3 laminate in a 300 WSM. I don't own a lot of guns like some hunters do. I am very selective. But the guns I do own I love. The Winchester Model 70 I think will be my next gun. It is priced at around $1400 CAD. Not too too pricey for a quality gun but still a little expensive. (slowly saving up for the purchase.) I plan to top it with a Nikon scope. Bought my first Nikon (prostaff 7) a year ago and I am very impressed with the scope. I feel it is better than my high-end Bushnells and my high-end Leupold scopes. BTW, did I say I love this forum?

thought I would add my humble opinion. Bought the savage axis .243 and got a hundred dollar american rebate back so ended up very reasonable rifle Got a deer and a coyote with the 100 grn. shells I reload myself. My chum N.G. got me into reloading and now I am addicted. I do quite a bit of target shooting and am getting excellent grouping with my reloads
