Just looking at the 14 day weather forecast up till Nov 16th there is NO daytime temperatures that are below zero. a few nighttime at minus 1 or 2 but nothing to make ice.

Winds seem to be strong so again hard to make ice when waters moving.

Last two years opening for hard water was late - may need to look further north.

Hope I'm wrong, season is already short for the ice hut operators.

Keep pushing the weather... for ice fishing conditions.
Will the cold weather will come soon enough?....no it won't.
I'm just glad you aren't over anxious...haha.

By the sounds of the fishery on Nip. now, it could be a great winter for Wallys.
Let's also hope the CO's are active as well.

Cheers,

While I'm not in a big hurry for cold weather, spent today building my new hut. Don't worry, the minus Temps will be here soon enough.

It's still early, I think everything should settle in by opening day.
Accuweather has a long range prediction that extends right into December. Those numbers look much better. https://www.accuweather.com/en/ca/north-bay...monyr=12/1/2017
I've been keeping an eye on the subsurface lake temperature. The sensor is located at sunset point, it's reading 10C at the moment and has been dropping about 1 degree per week. Last year the lake froze over when the sensor was at 4C.
As for the wind, let it blow. The wind will churn up the water and enhance the cooling of the water.

I think this link has been posted before but in case all are not familiar with it I will post again. It is for a weather buoy on Lake Nipissing that shows winds speed and direction, wave height and period, pressure, and air and water temperature. Currently showing the air temperature at 11 and the water temperature at 12.
There is other buoys on Simcoe and the Great Lakes as well.

I hadn't seen that one before, I'll add that to my ever increasing list of bookmarks.
There must have been a recent temperature change at the buoy, it's now showing +11C for both air and water. I think the air temperature might be somewhat skewed as the weather station is showing a temperature of +3C at the moment.
This is the link for the sensor at sunset point.

Temps look to be dropping significantly this week, especially Friday. Starting to get pretty pumped for the season, hard to not look at the weather forecast every day. Bring on the hard water season!

It's not all too bad. Wind and cold temperature are actually very helpful to get the water column temperature to that critical 4 C so all that is needed afterward is 2-3 days of -10 or below and calm to make good ice. let's hope later in the month or early December we get those much needed minus double digits

Well Antique Fisherman your concern may be legitimate. I checked the lake temperature sensor again today and it is sitting at 7C.
Last year I started jotting down some of the lake temperature milestones to use as a future reference. On Nov. 26 2016 the temperature sensor had dropped to 6C. This means we are behind last years cool-down and the long term temperature doesn't look as rosy as it once did.

Update: Lake Nipissing temperature has now dropped down to 6C, the exact same as last year. Now we'll see how well it does against the other benchmarks.
On Dec 4 2016 it hit 5C.
Dec 12 it was at 4C, and it froze over at this time.
