Yesterday the lake crusted out as far as I could see from the North shore. Unfortunately, the lake blew up in the evening and got rid of it all. Good sign though!

Hi I'm not from the area and Im wondering about when the lake normally freezes over
so that it is safe enough to fish on.

Lake Nipissing is closed to all fishing until January1. It should be good enough to fish at that time so long as you aren't traveling too heavy, such as driving a truck or attempting to put out a large bungalow.
Given the current lake temperature and the long range weather forecast, there might be 5-6" of ice on opening day this year.
As always, this is only an estimation, check again when it is closer to opening day for an update, and if the ice is marginal, test the area you plan on fishing.

Thanks, Buddy.

In the last 5.5 years that I have lived on the lake generally by the Jan 1st opener there is 8-12' inches of ice. One year there was only 5-6" and I waited a week or two before I got started. Usually, I have observed that the water finally crusts up on my part of the lake about 2 weeks into December and then in the final 2 weeks before the opener it just builds day by day

Every year the lake freezes and breaks up several times before the ice finally takes a solid hold. It's different every year. It's very dynamic. I love watching it. When the conditions are right and a thin layer forms then breaks up it can sound like champagne glasses clinking together outside of my window. Other times thin layers of the first ice wash up on shore and look like stacks of glass sheets.

I will try to post updates as they happen as I'm sure every true ice angler has been dreaming about ice fishing since the ice left last season.

The current update is that all the ice that formed the other morning is gone now as we had a heavy rain last night.

Are you familiar with any good ice hut rental places and or good places to ice fish on the lake
I'm planing on renting a hut but not necessarily planning staying there during the day.

Unfortunately, it's been warm, windy and raining hard for the last 2 days. Cool temps are coming tomorrow.

Well at least a few weeks, but we can only hope it's till march

Here's a video update of the state of the north shore as of December 7th.

Hopefully the video comes through.
