One snowmobiler is recovering in hospital and another is missing after their snowmobiles fell through ice on Sturgeon Lake in the Kawarthas on Saturday night.
OPP Sgt. Peter Leon said emergency crews were called to the lake after 7 p.m. for a report of two snowmobiles that had reportedly fallen through ice approximately 100 metres from the shoreline.
One snowmobiler was rescued by bystanders and relayed to paramedics in serious condition.
Leon says the other snowmobiler, a male, was not located.
Firefighters in insulated suits are searching for him. At least one helicopter is on scene assisting in lighting the scene.

I understand it was near Oak Park Road towards Bobcaygeon. Is there a lot of current in Big Bob or Little Bob Channel where there might have been little to no ice?

I was born and raised in Bobcaygeon and lived on the water on the other side of the channel across from oak park road. There's the dam and lock 32 at the end of Big Bob channel thats not far and i remember as kids when the weather changed you could watch huge sheets of ice float by towards that dam. Scary...

went by Hastings a few days ago on a very cold day and there was no ice up from the dam, wide open. Even the main lakes have less ice than you'd expect for the cold temps we've had. Be careful.

Wife just read an article that stated the second snowmobiler was found deceased. Not a good day. Just a reminder to be as safe as we can be on the ice.

They were in a current area. The main part of the lake has lots of ice. No news on exact details but I'm guessing they slowed down where there was current under them, driving in this area is dangerous all the time. Slowing down there is a no, no as we all have heard why. Condolences to those affected.
