With all this flip flopping weather we've been having I'm hesitant about going out on the ice. Just curious what ice conditions you guys are seeing on chemong around Gifford bay? Thanks in advance

If you haven't got the proper equipment like a spud bar to check for yourself then don't go on the ice ever, even if you see people on the ice doesn't make it safe. Also never take anyone's word that it's safe either.

Was out on Saturday and sunday ice was 14-16 inches thick. Water on ice Saturday and it froze back up on sunday. Some vehicles on the ice also. Needed cleats to walk very slippery.

Did you end up going out? I'm considering a ride across on my bike (cyclist) today and thought best to check in with the folks that would know the topic well.

Just north of the causeway from jones beach right across is my intended path. I know it's not much, and to some maybe laughable that I would be nervous about the ice, but, we all start somewhere right?

Has anyone been out on the ice in the last couple days ? The last time I was out there 16 -20 inches but with this real warm weather probably has dwindled down a lot

Rice where we fished last night was solid 16+ " and no issues. Cleats were required cause the surface was slick. I would say, don't go anywhere with an inflow or current and check the ice when you're going out. Thickness varies. Last year I had 8" in the middle of Chemong and 2" inches closer to shore coming in. Yes I broke through and do not want to repeat that. Anyone driving a vehicle is taking unnecessary risk. So be careful always.

Went out yesterday on chemong ice was still 13 inches in all the areas we drilled , but shorelines are starting to get real crumby . Probably caught 50 perch , but only 2 over 11 inches . Was a fun season but it will be the last trip for me ,no sense of taking unnecessary risks. .
