They should of left it the 15th. There are other lakes to fish such as rosseau if it isn't open before family day weekend. Most years the 15th will be before family day weekend anyways. Someone that is high up in the mnr must have a cottage on lake joe and didn't want anyone fishing it before they could or didn't want to rosseau. Just don't know why they needed to changed the date.

Wait...Where's lake Joseph?

Haha

If you're familiar with the area, it's about 30 minutes outside Utterson.

I don't disagree but I think the priority was to make sure it was always going to be open for Family Day Weekend. Pretty sure they changed the regs on a year that would have seen it open on the Sunday or Monday.

Why would it matter if it opened on a monday or sunday when there is other lakes very close by. You can catch as good on rosseau. Its been opening the 15th forever. I could see if there was no other lakes close.

Chuck

It used to open on the 15th ,no matter what day it fell on.
The past few years the MNRF changed it because of family day weekend.
They wanted the family's to take advantage of the full weekend of fishing.

If I'm not wrong, a few years ago ,the season was scheduled to open on the sunday of family day, so the MNRF changed the opening date by a day or two.

I'm assuming this tradition will stick now by changing the date to Saturday midnight.

Yes, like a couple of years back to make sure it is open during Family Day long weekend, MNR had to change the opening date (after recreational fishing regulations summary for that year has already been published/made available to the general public).

Problem (if I could call it a problem) I see is, why is it so necessary to have the opening day like Feb 16 in one year, Feb 15 in another year, and yet Feb 17 in another year (so as to open EXACTLY on the Saturday of the Family Day long weekend, or so as to make sure it is open on the 3rd Saturday in February)?

I mean had it made the day fixed say February 10th in each year in any year and in every year, then:

1. It is 100% guaranteed that it will be open during the entire Family Day long weekend, and

2. It makes you and me and everyone and all life a lot easier: Just one single date (that is, February 10th) to write down, to remember, and to tell other. FOREVER... (as opposed to, let me check calendar and see and figure it out: What are the dates for the Family Day long weekend this year in 2018? Oh yeah! They are from Saturday Feb 17 to Monday Feb 19 in 2018. Hence the opening date in 2018 is Saturday Feb 17!)

I THINK THE WORDING IS CHANGED THIS YEAR. NOT SURE.

I think it says that it is closed to the Friday before the family day weekend.

That explains it fine to me.

sign at the bait shop says 17th and when I spoke with the ministry when they stopped by my pop up(2nd time in a week) on Ross they said that was correct.

note:
that's the most I've seen ministry in three years you can be sure they will be out in force for the 16th through the weekend

You are giving the wrong information unfortunately:-)

Quote from Ontario MNR 2018 Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary on Lake Joseph exceptions (for Zone 15, Page 73):

Lake Joseph and Little Lake Joseph - Humphrey and Medora Township:

Fish sanctuary no fishing from Jan. 1 - Fri. before Family Day

unquote

(So it opens at 12:01 am Saturday the 17th! NOT Friday the 16th!!!)

I don't fish it, but hear and read this confusion with the opener every year.

James. I agree with you

Simplify the friggin thing and open it the 2nd Saturday of Feb. each year or just pick a firm date before family day and be done with it.
