Hey Everybody.....This looks very interesting for use here in Southern Ontario but not sure how well it will work in Northern Ontario with over 3 ft of ice.
Checkout this new conversion kit for this year from Clam to use an 18 volt portable drill on an auger.
Also says Canadian Tire is a Dealer but I haven't checked yet to see if the CTC
near me here in Lindsay has it or will order them in.

It needs to be a good drill and bring the extra battery. Unless very thin ice don't expect to run and gun a hundred holes in a day, but will get the job done for most people. If I'm gonna and and gun I bring my gas auger. If I'm gonna drill a few holes and sit I bring the hand auger. The only part that ever wears out is me.

Watched a guy last year in Haliburton use one, drilled at least 25 holes and had power to burn.
I ordered one off of ebay at the end of last season. Guy in Michigan or Minnesota mills them himself. What grabbed my attention is the fact it has a hole on either side tool and died so you can attach a couple of 6" bars. The premise being that should the chuck slip when you are reversing out your auger doesnt end up at the bottom of the lake. Exactly that scenario played out a few years back for a buddy of mine.
Some models have a bungy like harness but that looked a little weak to me.
As for drills I've been watching the Milwaukee 18v hammer drill for 10 months. It just dropped from $299 to $189 at Home Depot. Maybe a lot of drill but I figure I can make good use of it. I assume that if you get a cheapy at CT you'll end up twisting by hand sometime not so far in the future.
My 2 cents.

burnzy1945.....I don't see why you would have to put your drill in reverse to
pull the auger out of the hole.
You don't do that with a hand auger or a gas auger.
Especially a gas auger....You just keep it spinning it forward and pull
the auger up out of the hole.
In the above Clam Video he doesn't put his drill in reverse just gives
it a little burst of power in forward and pulls the auger out of the hole.

LF,
Dont know except for fact the story my friend told me. As well I've seen it mentioned/ discussed on other forums, and the fact some come with the bungy harness suggests to me that it does occur. When I told buddy of my plan he started in on me until I mentioned the configuration of the one I was buying. To which he responded gruffly "uhh, that just might do'er".

BTW The auger that went swimming was actually Bob Izumi's. LOL

it's not so much the drill I would be concerned about, it would be the battery the drill uses, keep your batteries warm and u should have no issues.

I wonder how much ice they are drilling through on the video . Don't even think my gas auger can drill 24 holes on one tank .....loll

The nice part about the auger is no gas and oil smell on your hands when touching your lure just after drilling . Something about the battery smells fishy . Any gas auger I have owned has never failed me unless no fuel .....loll

burnzy1945....I am not saying the auger going down the hole would never happen.
There is such a thing as Murphy's Law for things to go wrong.
That adapter rod you show certainly would do the trick to stop that.

Speaking of Murphy's Law.....In 1982 I bought a brand new
Jiffy 3 HP Gas Auger from Le'Barons drove to Skeleton Lake
near Bracebridge Ont and went out on the ice and the very
first hole I was drilling the weld on the shaft to the motor broke
with 3/4's of a hole drilled in 3 feet of ice.
Motor worked like a trooper but like in neutral.
I had to borrow a hand auger to fish. LOL.

Le'Barons was good thought.....they exchanged augers no problem.

While we are on the discussion of augers, I saw one last year powered by propane and it looked quite interesting. We have a newish auger so not in the market for one but it might be something you want to check out James.

Check it out:

Thank you Bob for the detailed info (and for the great search and found "on my behalf":-)

I might just go this route (head to a nearby U.S. city), and get it. Though I wonder for around $500 or $600 purchase, if I need to stay overnight somewhere down south to enjoy whatever Canadian import duty/tax exemption? haha.

James, as a frequent visitor to the States, you'll need to be there 48 hours unless they changed the rules. Seneca Casino in Niagara Falls NY allows smoking and you get free drinks when you're gambling.

Just a thought.

Yep, more than 24 hours gets you a $200 exemption and more than 48 hours gets you an $800 exemption.
