I have some more detailed pics. Look at the mouth inside. It is gray with lighter gums. So,I tend to agree with Disco, it is a coho. But the prominently forked tail still makes me doubtful.
Also note the unusual bow shape of the fish. I noticed it almost instantly as I saw the fish, still in the water. It has a relatively short and wide body shape.
Could it be a cross?

Cohos have forked tails. Some more prominent than others. Also when the tail is compressed like in your pic it looks more pronounced.

I can’t do a genetic test for a hybrid. 😂

Either way it is 100% Coho IMO.

Coho with forked tail pic.

Thanks a lot for the discussion! Convinced. Coho. Even though next time I get a salmon I still won't be able to tell what it is.

Go on line.

Save a bunch of pics and ID info into your phone.
Use it when you’re on the water.

It’s important to know. You don’t want to kill an undersized Atlantic or keep 2 Atlantic accidentally and be screwed.

Most common fish to look like an Atlantic is a Brown but I have seen a ton of people mistake them for Steelhead and other Salmon.

I do all of these.... Still when it comes to reality I am always confused.
But I think I will be able to distinguish atlantic.. (Never got one). It seems that I am able to recognize a bow from a chinook/coho…

I agree. That's why I ask and try to learn. But I'm not good in it...

Mark some simple rules to follow for Chinook vs Coho ID.
Spots covering tail Chinook. There will be a ton of spots.
Spot on the top half of the tail Coho. Cohos can have the odd few spots on the very lower edge of their tail but it’s very few and only on the edge.
Chinook all black mouth. Coho black mouth white gums.
Already explained the anal fin so you have that.
I will post pics of the tails and you can easily see the difference.

Thanks, Disco!
I get a better general picture now...
It is obvious to me now that here is a coho. But the confusing part is that if you look at my recent post in the GB section, there is a chinook... with quite light mouth and a very dark tail, so I wasn't sure if there are any spots at all on it.. But the most confusing thing was a gray mouth and whitish gums.
But yes, I got a better idea now.
Thanks a lot!

I'm leaning towards rainbow, maybe a small coho, here's a chart with all the info you need: Fish ID

Spread the tail to see the dots, whether they're all over or just the top half or radiating in straight lines.

That fish ID chart that fisherman has provided is a great one. I have it saved to my phone and has helped me to identify cohos and other trout.
