Hey all,
Looking for an ice report for G-Bay at Lafontaine. I expect piles of pack ice and open water lol. But figured I’d check as it’s in my list as we have private access there. Does this area “predictably” freeze usually? Being such a large Great Lake I would expect ice shelf separation from shore would be a concern, watching wind and conditions critical. Would feel better fishing if the entire Nottawasaga Bay was frozen, but given that it’s wide open to the prevailing winds from the open lake, I’m skeptical and rather cautious. However, I consider this inquiry a crucial part of my research and any insight is greatly appreciated.
Targets would be bows, Salmons, Lakers, Ciscos, maybe a whitefish? And walleye. 1.4 km off shore out access is 70fow. Couple underwater points along the drop with plateaus between 30-60 fow look interesting. I’d fish em if I was inland n a shield lake… but I know it’s very different in gbay.

It never freezes!! i mean it did back in early 2000's or was it 90's then again in 2014 but thats it and even if it does freeze walking will be impossible and forget about drilling a hole, 10' of pack ice under the ice. Plus no fish, trust me! a lot of this side of the bay never freezes however there are pockets that will freeze and hold fish and has public access. I know this shoreline and every public access point from Deanlea to Penetang and which access point has fish. Message me if you want intel but dont waste your time on this spot and if it does freeze, dont go, its extremely unsafe.

I like reading your posts, don't go out there man. Way too much weather/wind churning up the water under the ice on the east side of Georgian Bay/ Lake Huron. That's if there is any ice. Krawler is wise, bad idea, very bad. We played on pack ice when we were kids...we weren't very smart back then.

Thank you for the info. This is what I was expecting as it appears to be wide open most of the time. I’m sure there are SOME fish out there, not worth the risk by the sounds of it. If only I could access around the corner to the north, I know there are definitely more fish up there. I’ve seen some epic salmon angling through the ice up there. But access is a pain. I will send PM and pick your brain though. thank you.

Appreciate that. Yes I am not needing to go for a swim. Or end up n the middle of the lake on an iceberg. I know there are more sheltered areas with fish. This is why this type of research is crucial. Would be nice to use that access open water I suppose.

Ice fishing for salmon is near non existent on our side of the Bay. You are likely seeing vids from last year around wiarton where they had a extremely brief period of freeze up and guys got on some sketchy ice for salmon. You can catch salmon on our side but where is the key, i wont share online. Always keep expectations low when ice fishing our side. catching a fish is always a bonus but venture forth but venture safe, we always have late ice and ice is always sketchy. i could tell a few wet stories and I'm lucky to be still here to tell them.
