I was on Rice lake on Saturday with my fishing buddy. It was relatively calm with some breeze. It was a perfect day for slow drifting. Fished 5 feet to 11 feet of water. The spots I fished contain almost every element for holding fish, weed, rock, some micro structure, etc. I started fishing at 10 am and done by 4 pm. Crankbaits and jerkbaits are my tools and jig head with jerk minnow for my buddy. We fished the same spot with different techniques. The plan sounds good but the result is not. Here are the lures I used and how I worked with them. 1,lipless crankbait (strike king redeye shad, rapala rippin rap). slow rolling the lure along the bottom and yo-yoing the lure. When I felt the weed I ripped it off from the hang. No bite. 2, Switched to jerk bait(Rapala shadow rap deep). Casted it out and let the lure reached the maximum depth. Pulled it for 4-5 feet and pause. Repeat the process. During the retrieve I gave the lure some random little twitch to make it looks erratic. Only OOS bass and pike showed up. 3, Went to deeper water around 10 feet. I fished Rapala DT 6,8, and 10. To find out where the fish are. Slow rolling was my presentation. Grinding the bottom or tick the top of the weed. OOS bass again no walleye. My buddy went to opposite way. He fished jig head with jerk minnow all day long. Small hopping along the bottom. Ripping off the lure from weed when he tossed the lure into weed. Only couple of bites by the OOS bass. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.
