Fishing in the cold...good job. Cool picture, the bird is an Osprey. My pair of Osprey outfished me on Friday but were a big help on Saturday, marking the fish. That last picture of the lake is outstanding, you should put that scene in a frame.

Google Lens accepted and recognized the bird. It was a Bittern. Unique posture and hard to spot on a similar background like on this photo.

Thanks RM for doing that. I just assumed it was a larger diving bird with that picture in flight. Thought it was carrying a fish, guess that was its legs. LOL. I was way off on that.

Awesome report and pictures. That is beautiful country and its always nice to see a moose.
Good success on the fishing side of it with some pretty lakers.
Do you often catch brookies in Opeongo?

I agree. The fishery is a shadow of what it was back in the 70's and 80's. Way too much angling pressure now. The FAU and Harkness data clearly shows that anglers have exceeded the total allowable lake trout harvest for more than two decades. At what point does someone make a management decision and introduce new regulations?. It's 30 years overdue! Someone in MNR needs a spank in the head with a hardwood stick! Their creel data clearly shows that the majority of the harvest is by locals who hit the lake alot, and are familiar with the lake and target lakers with electronics and down riggers. I'd like to see:

Closed sanctuary until the third weekend in May
Prohibit use of front scan sonar
Prohibit use of downriggers. Leadcore and wire are OK.

It's only going to get worse with technology advancements and population growth (it's only taken 47 years for world population to double). We hit 10 billion by 2050, basically considered carrying capacity for the planet. Glad I got to fish Opeongo when it was amazing.

I guess my ratio for brookies is not that bad because I have fished the lake only 5-6 times and caught 1st brook trout last year when I tried to target lakers for the first time.
Before 2025 I only targeted SMB while camping there.
Wanted to try them this time by turning right at the launch, but there is a "no motor" buoy. Maybe next time when I am on a canoe .

A worker came by and asked me a bunch of questions and gave me a bulletin from that lab. I could not find exactly the same online to post a link.
Looks like the situation with lakers is improving regarding the current harvest ratio being below the MSY.

More SMBs are kept which would help trout but also more was caught which rather means more bass are in the lake.

Great pics, one of my favorite lakes in the park. Can sometimes be a bit busy but always produces some nice fish.
