Nice work on the lures. Only in my dreams, absolutely no patience for that kind of stuff. I'd screw up the paint 100% of the time rushing it.

Lol, I hear that!!!

This has taught me a great deal of patience... a great deal. Also, a great deal of profanities, and sleepless nights.

😂

the lures look awesome ! I've thought of trying to make some . One question I have is how do you run the wire straight thru the wood ? Do you split the wood and glue together again ?

Hi Jim,

The wire through has a few possible ways to install it.

Split bait, as you mentioned... channel the wire slots, bend the wire and reattached the 2 halves

Bottom channel... create a channel in the lower half running front to back, install the wire and fill the channel with a wood shim, epoxy, wood filler, or bondo. Sand it flush, and youíre good.

Drill (the method I use) a hole from front to back all the way through and thread the wire through. Can be a pain in the butt to get right, but each one teaches you a bit more on doing it more accurately.

End of the day, trial and error is your best friend that you love to hate when doing these. Iím still getting the hang of it, but at least itís getting to the point I can make a bait that looks okay and it runs the way I want.

Iíd urge you to give it a try... itís slightly addictive, and requires a bit of investment if you donít have the tools, but itís a blast to see a bait you made run like a champ!

Good luck!

I am doing a big gold glitter... hoping to have it done for the weekend! Canít wait to see it after the paint and eyes are done!

Some very nice work there! I've been playing with a bunch of musky baits myself this year and quite enjoy painting the larger baits! I build my own molds then cast my own blanks. Faster/more durable than the wood and will never take on water. Solid wire construction. Wish I had more time to actually use them! Post pics when I figure out how.

Based on your name, are you the ďMeegsĒ? 😁

If so, I can imagine how much more freedom youíd have with painting muskie sized baits! Lol

Iíve considered the mold thing before, but Iím hooked on cedar!

Each material has its pros and cons, and much of the wood and through wire thing is more a show piece than functionality. The big ticket baits are wood with through wire... so naturally, I must make my life as difficult as possible. Lol

One thing is for certain... every bait will be one of a kind! That could be a very good thing, or a very bad thing! 😳

Post up some of your creations, Iíd love to see what others are working on. Itís a fun little hobby that passes the time when I canít be on the water.
