Got the family out last Saturday for a long drive and hike into the bush. Passed a lot of lakes with open water and everyone was skeptical whether it would be safe. Arrived at the lake early afternoon and shoreline looked to be holding up pretty good.
After a few spots not marking anything , a couple hours went by before I noticed my rod gone. So I run over and all I can see is a few inches of my cork handle sticking out. My handle was the only thing saving it from going down the 4 inch hole. Pick up the rod and fish was still on. Got the fish landed and relieved I didn’t lose my rod. So I put little bells on a couple rods lol. Afternoon bite was definitely on. Landed 3 within 5 minutes. Overall we went 7 for 7 and missed 2 hits.
Lots of ice but most of it was white with only couple of inches of clear ice in some spots. Be careful out there, especially with all this rain we just got.

Awesome! From the photos they look like splake.

For me the square tail is usually a dead give away its a brookie. I haven’t caught many splake, but the ones that I’ve seen have a somewhat forked tail.
