Back in the 60s (yup showing my age lol )my dad and I fished rice lake almost every weekend , caught many sunnies that filled a dinner plate as well and bass and walleye..

Interesting observation , on occasion there was a boat with american lads fishing a method we had never seen, as always rice develops a weed mat that is impossible to fish with standard methods...

They would drift over the weeds looking for any holes no matter how small, using a 12 to 16 ft cane pole with heavy line and large bucktail jigs would dunk any holes...it worked, many wallrye, bass and even the odd muskiie fell for this approach , if they hit a fish too large to flip in they would throw the pole in and follow it till tired..

Maybe hard to believe with modern technics but it worked where nothing else did

And we thought we knew it all...

Dave

I have seen videos of people crappie fishing like that, from way down south.
