Yep. Bowfin. Swamp trout. Dogfish. Good giveaway is the black spot by the tail. Not all have then, but most do.

yep, most ppl won't like this unless its kept alive in the cooler, cleaned and cooked immediately.

I left a chuck in the fridge with some salt, pan fried it today, its very mushy. more mushy than catfish. The meat did not feel as mushy yesterday when I was cleaning it and chopping it into chunks.

I have the rest frozen so I think i will try to cook from frozen next time and see how it goes.

Otherwise, If I ever get another one, its going back into the lake after a few pics.

I've never caught one, but apparently they put up one heck of a fight.

Bowfin or Dogfish it is. I got a fairly big one in Georgian bay quite a long time ago. We were dying for some table fare, got no other fish but that one. Not knowing what it was back then it went back into the bay.
I wouldn’t call it barking but it did make some sort of gurgling noise that no other fish ever made. It’s one interesting looking thing, I would say a burbot is a cutie compared to a bowfin! Lol
