I will be taking an elderly friend of mine to Spanish Ont. in late June. He is originally from that area and it is primarily a fishing trip but also a stroll down memory lane for him i assume.
He is 85 so we will be boat fishing. He wants to fish the Spanish for walleye one of the days and is concerned it will be too late and a waste of time by then so if anyone can provide some insight it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I will have some time to myself when he is resting etc. but am totally unfamiliar with the area. I am a fly fisherman when i have the choice and would love to go after some specks if possible although bass season will be open by then so top water bass/pike is more than fine with me as well. If anyone has any general suggestions on patterns etc. or would be willing to suggest/share any locations as starting points please feel free to PM me.
Thanks.

Great minds must think alike.

I'm heading up to the Spanish River area tomorrow. I called a friend yesterday who said the Walleye are still in the river and good catches were being had.
Might be a thought to give it a try and let your elderly friend enjoy some Walleye action.

If you go... good luck,

Cheers,

P.S. This is where my wife says...its cheaper to go to the store for Walleye....lol.

FYI - My brother and I went to a Spanish River resort last yr in the first week of July. We found the river run of Walleye was just over. We didn't get any in the river, but did well with Walleye in the many bays on main Lake.
Seems early to mid-june might be the best time to give the river Walleye a try.

Cheers,

Thanks for the reply Fozzy.
Unfortunately as we ease out of the shutdown work has started to pick up significantly for me so there is no option to get there before June 20 weekend.
We will be quite near Waterfalls resort and probably end up on at least one of the lakes they access according to their website so I guess we will follow that advice and try to locate them in the bays.
As I said, totally unfamiliar with the area and far from a knowledgeable walleye angler so at this point i guess my question changes: any suggestions for baits/depths etc. to target them?
I understand bass season opens that weekend so i can chase them on the fly during downtime but the oldtimer is fixed on a pickerel dinner so any advice is greatly appreciated.
Enjoy and let us know how it went when you get back.

In the past we found various structure, drop-offs yielded most Wallys, bottom bouncing with jigs with worm or soft plastic produced as well, usually in 15- 20ft of water. In the end, it's just nice to breath that fresh air and "fish" the area.

I guarantee you will enoy yourselves...whether you catch fish or not.

Cheers & Good Luck,

Fuzzy47 has you dialed in pretty good. I think your going at a great time actually. Wallies will be coming out of the river and they will be hungry. Brennen Harbour is where I'd focus. Not really a secret since Bob Izumi has a youtube video on it. I believe it is a 2 fish limit but the fishing is so good having 4 fish between you and your buddy will get plenty full. One of the best multi species area that I can think of. Good luck and if your stuck PM me. But I dont think you will need too.

IFIDA, I think we will be fishing Kecil and Lang at some point. Any suggestions for presentations/depth to target?
Also, do you see any point in fishing the Spanish for pickerel or you think we we are too late for that now?
Thanks

try all the points & drop-offs & around islands, there is lake trout in Kecil & in the centre I've marked up to 82 ft sometimes see guys out their down rigging troll some rapalas or just good ol jig head & worm..As far as the river I've never fished it on soft water try calling Vances camp & maybe ask them..

The first week of July last yr my brother and I went up to Vances Resort to fish Walleye in the River. Unfortunately the Walleye had just moved out of the river by then. Apparently we missed the river fishing by about a week or so. Looks like you might be right on the bubble.

I was up there 10 days ago (found Vances Resort was closed due to the virus) but the river fishing was in full swing...never saw so many boat fishing so close together... and it appeared most boats were catching fish too.

Last yr we did very well in the local bays and around some of the near by islands. The limit is 2 in the Lake (Georgian Bay) and 4 in the river. We had Walleye & eggs every morning, so no complaints at all.
What a great Walleye fishing area in general, either in the river or lake.

It's tough being retired....lol.

Go any way, you'll have fun either way.

Cheers,

thanks for the reminder! i gotta get mentally prepared i guess 'cause i find a bug suit when fishing or working outside just as annoying as the actual bugs themselves... used to live in the Bancroft area and was well used to it but its been a while in the city now so i guess we'll see how long it takes me to either get extremely annoyed or find the ability to just tune em out and let em eat
