I fished lake Rosseau feb 6. I walked out and what a nightmare that was. Foot of snow and slush with 6 inches black ice measured. I was on east side of the lake just on the outside of a bay. Not sure how main basin ice is but I know it froze later than the ice I was on.

If you think it's worth all the effort to walk out for two dinky lakers , then by all means, go for it.

in my 50 years of fishing this lake

Wow! 50 years of fishing such a horrible sounding lake!

LOL
I didn't mean it to sound that way.
That lake has been great.
All I'm insinuation is that I'm to old to go through that stuff this year.
Leave it to the young at heart.
I'll be out there once the trails are good for me and my ATV.

I for one know how big the lake trout can get.
I just see a lot of people catch small fish and three feet of snow for small fish is not worth it for me anymore.

I'll wait

I have set my goal to a 8lber this year. I find that most of the fish are in the 3-5 lb range in my local spot. Now that I'm mobile I am hoping to try some different areas this season. Save a chunky 1 for me

Certainly not ATV lake this week, I was on the lake this week and there's a couple feet of snow and some areas are horrible slush. Walking would be hell too, make sure everyone in your group have high waterproof boots on.
Be safe

well this sucks lol i haven't fished joe in 7 years, last time i tried to go lake wasn't froze to my honey hole. i finally was able to buy a decent atv just to go back to joe to relive some of my younger day fishing with family. yes the fish are a bit on the smaller side but very tasty. i guess i can either wait a few weeks till sledders have packed down a good trail for me or hope that there isnt as much snow next year.

If trail is soft donít drive ATV on it and screw it all up. Many guys with huts out thatís there safety ride in.. any ruts makes for a terrible ride especially if towing sleigh. Be respectful.

Just be patient
This slush will settle and freeze up in a few weeks making for excellent travel conditions
Still lots of time in the season

Agree, Georgian bay is on the verge of freezing so lake affect snow might start to ease up or even stop if it fully freezes. Iíve had great days in April after a thaw and refreeze, even skated out a few times since itís way easier than loading up the machine and you cover ground just as fast as a 9.9 in the summertime! April 20th was my latest day out there in 2014. Brought the hut instead of using sunscreen! Also, yes the rutts on the main trail are a hazard and people on atvs should at least try to follow each otherís tracks and avoid zig zagging back and forth across the main trail when itís soft. Otherwise it wonít freeze nice instead your rutts become frozen speed bumps!

Slush was there Saturday. Ice was 7 inches black 3 inches white. Had a nice time caught about 14 smaller ones and kept 2 which were around 14 plus inches. Sunny but cold and no winds.

Atvs were struggling. So I decided that day to take skidoo to play it safe.
