Have you guys seen this web site?
https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/?p=geo....57300216079333
Refresh it every day to get the latest photo. We bought a cottage at the mouth of the French 2 years ago and I use this web site along with you board members to let me know when I can take the trip from Dokis to the cottage for the first time.
You can go back by the day, month or year. Very interesting to see how the ice was the on same date year to year. You can also move your view to a different location/lake.

Thanks for the link. That's a good tool to use. Can zoom in too much but it will give a good idea as to what's going on (except for cloudy days).

QUOTE (ZzzAngler @ Apr 24, 2018 - 08:38 pm)
I went out on the weekend and drilled a few holes along the South Shore between Callander Bay and DWP. Strolled out about 1/2 km drilling holes as I went and the ice was pretty consistent at about 26 inches thick. It has been milder since and some slush is starting to develop on the surface. Iím no expert but guess it is going to be awhile before itís gone. Hopefully itís all gone by the opener. 🐟😃🙏🏻
Tight lines.

(26" thick between Callander Bay and DWP!) So much for getting to the boat ready soon...LOL

26" thick!!
a week later and the weather has turned, i noticed a few other threads going on here.
sorry to beat a broken drum, but you guys who are more local and have more experience than me , your confident ice will be out in 3 weeks.?
26" seems like a ton to melt in that time frame... but my knowledge is far less than others on this one.

I think it'll be out for sure in 3 weeks. To hang on any longer, we'd need cooler weather in the next couple of weeks. It has been cold in April, but the forecast is getting warmer, especially at night, which is the key. The record is May 19th. In 2014 it was out on the 14th of May (latest in a while). Plotted up daily average temps from that year and this year (may 2018 temps are based on forecast). So it's been colder than 2014 up to now, but it's getting warmer! So I'm thinking May 14-19 if I had to guess.

Also... North Bay has decent temperature records. So plotted up the temperatures from 1926 when the record ice off was May 19th... Seems very similar trends to this year!! Big difference is the forecast for May vs the May 1926 temps... So the next two weeks will be very important in determining if we beat the record!

ar705, great work, interesting. only thing I can add is the record in 1926 is not one I care to beat.

cheers on the great post though!!

Agreed!! Don't think we'll beat it though.. Air temp is only part of the equation. Today's rain and forecast for more rain on Friday will help a lot too. More effective way of getting heat into the ice!

Couple pics from yesterday evening... Callander Bay ice looking pretty dark. Open areas around mouth. Main lake still pretty white!! But it'll change quickly. I think my estimate of 15th is too late, will be before that!! I'll check the overhead again this weekend! As an aside, Lake Nosbonsing looked to have the darkest ice... Betting it'll go first around here. Then maybe even Trout Lake before Nip (I think it was out before Nip last year).

Main Lake:

That's questionable lol say pics don't paint a pretty picture even after the warmth and wind.
