Too much water to cover and fear of what they will find!

I agree its a ton of water to cover and results may be disturbing. but if they did conduct the sweep of the lake in any extent, it could gain exposure and fishermen/the general public would find out what's going on and that could be resulting positive change from it? the only way to truly get change is to shock the public like that... if they kept it under wraps, they sweeping it under the rug and hoping it goes away. it will only get worse... I think this could help...

With technology today, wouldn’t it be possible to attach a gps transmitter to every net so tracking and identification would be possible?

Eh, there's no benefit to tagging and tracking nets for commercial netters who answer to nobody.

there needs to be a full on investigation on this for a couple of reasons, for one the nets were not tagged, secondly they are abandoned and why?
why would you put nets out and not recover them? did they blow off site in a storm or wind and if so brings us back to the fact they are unmarked nets.
this is completely illegal either way and whoever is responsible is either destroying their own livelihood while illegally not marking their property or not even legally allowed to net in the first place. one way or the other someone needs to be held accountable.

the less obvious problem here is boats getting caught up in these things or even worse a person or child depending where these end up drifting.

the final issue here is the ones who don't obey the laws in the first place reading this stuff and thinking obviously we can get away with whatever we want there because there is no follow through and clearly not very regulated.

A small group is now responsible for the majority of commercial netting on Nipissing. This is a group of 30 or less. And if you watch the video of Lorne Stevens embarrassing himself you will understand that this guy would be the type to forget and mismanage his own nets.

thanks sterling, that's one video I have never saw before, you hit the nail on the head, who was actually harassing who?? I heard a couple sexual harassments, a violence threat. good grief.
and at the end of the day that whole thing reinforced my point as well, telling everyone there is no one out checking anything on the water. its sad, I wonder how stupid he will feel when there is no fishery left. that whole memorandum of understanding was put in place to help the fishery as well as the native fishermen to ensure a livelihood for years to come.
