Almost 50 years since the last time we fished for those monsters. Did not have all the great equipment available now. I used an old two peice rod and a zebco closed face reel. Now my poles are all one peice and phleuger reels. We used what ever thick mono line we could find a bobber and steel leader and a hook. Had no clue what we were doing. Just learning along the way. Time sure goes by fast. Here is a picture of a reel that was close to my zebco.

Have caught a couple by accident. They feel like cardboard and man are they ugly. Research teams on certain waters are suprised by the number they net. Good fun for the whole family

I caught a few of these guys fishing on the Grand when I was a teenager. Biggest one I ever got was around 5ft long and what a fight that was. I thought I hooked into another large carp until I saw it jump for the first time. I targeted them for about 3 years after that but never got one bigger. So much fun.

Wow, You do realize that is canadian record length. Like I said in earlier post these fish were everywhere when I was a kid. We caught hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of them, and frequently in the 46 to 50, 51, 52 inch size. You should see if you can register your fish with a picture or something. All the years we fished for these monsters...never heard of a 60 inch GARATER that's what we called them. You are very lucky, all of ours were caught in the warm waters of lake erie. You got yours in the grand at 60 inches that would be over 50 lbs. HOLY CRAP that's a big fish. What did you catch it with...What bait etc.

I wish I could find the pictures. It was on a disposable camera and I had them printed. It was not heavy though. Very very long but skinny. I'd say maybe 15lbs but maybe more since the weight was distributed over such a length.

Well you will always have the memory. I hardly ever took pictures before I joined this forum. Most of my fishing is at night so pictures are not good quality, but I am getting better. Hoping to have many pictures to post later this season when I get back to chasing the monsters.
