Was out on Sturgeon yesterday and observed a very disturbing pair of boats. They were anchored with multiple rods out, 2 guys per boat i counted 2 rods per person, one guy seemed to be using 3 rods. What gives? I approached them and they said it was legal. They were hammering panfish, bass and keeping them. called MNR anyway, no one showed.

Unfortunately this happens more than people realize. Over fishing, using more than one rod, keeping fish out of season or the wrong size fish. What exactly did the MNR say to you on the phone? Did they say there was a CO in the area? Did they ask for details of the incident? I have been on the phone with the MNR many times and it's usually a long call. How were they with you yesterday? Some call takers are better then others. Were you satisfied with the conversation you had with them.

It always happen in the lake I fish! Especially during Crappie season. Multiple rods and hanging Lights out the boat to attach fish. I did approach to them and tell them it’s illegal, some of them will argue! If this happen I will take their photo telling them I will send to MNR and I really did. The CO will ask me lots of questions about the lake, the are also the time. They also will call me back after the got those people!

Me, I think the rule needs to change. Sport fishermen like myself who are mostly catch and release should be able to use two rods. Think of how many fish the Indigenous catch in their nets every week. Probably more than I catch in a lifetime!

I am going to say this as politely as I can. Just so there is no confusion to anyone reading this. This is their land, always has been their land. Their land was stolen from them a long time ago. Indigenous people have had to fight to get their rights back and there is still so much more that should be done. The government has made excuses forever, and is still making excuses over many life and death issues. Who cares how many fish MY FRIENDS CATCH. My friends are responsible and follow the same beliefs of fishing that I do. My fathers friend was the first person to explain to me as a child, the beautiful life and spirit of fishing. It's simple, fishing is a way of life, a custom, a culture, a tradition, a heritage.................... A RIGHT.

Completely agree with CM. We "sport fishermen" do not have "rights" to the resources here....we have privileges given to us for a fee (and can easily be taken away if we fail to obey by those rules for the privileges provided). FN people have rights that are not "given" to them for a fee....they JUST have those rights (and still not all of those rights have been provided to them even if promised under many treaties that were agreed upon but we have failed to honour). No difference in my mind with C&R or catch/eat fishermen... all have to follow the existing rules.

No disrespect to CM but bringing that kind of politics to this thread with words like "their" and "stole", is just semi-woke rhetoric, NOT poaching on Sturgeon Lake. Problem with "rights" as you put it is this....our provinces and countries politicians makes the mistake of classifying different peoples, races, and religious beliefs and giving them DIFFERENT "rights". I believe we should all abide by the same set of rules. The rules established to protect the resource, not to maximize consumption. My family is all 'born' here...who cares...we follow the Ontario Sportfishing rulebook. Turtle egg harvest is a "right" in some Latin American countries, so is whale harvesting in some countries, education and change renders these as bad a mistake as well, and change takes place. We need to go forward together not backwards and selfishly alone.

Two lines are allowed in many lakes ice fishing and Lake Ontario, so it really shouldn’t be a problem. There were a lot more fish being pulled out of Balsam during the seventies when I was a kid than there is now, before regulations and licensing.
What has increased and probably accounts for lower fish stocks these days is development and boat traffic.

There was no politics in what I said, just honesty. My friends ancestors were here long before all of us. It's their land to live the way they always have. Government made politics. All I was saying is who cares how many fish my friends catch on their land. To compare the regulations that we must follow, to their right to fish is quixotic.
