For sure. Great points and reminders on fishing early season pike. Completely agree with the trolling being too fast to be really effective for cold water pike.

Nice, ive tried Balsam twice this year with nothing. The weather is all over, 0* mornings and 13* afternoons, then it snows. I think the weather is causing later warm water, when I was out water was still cold, no fish in shallow water anywhere I went.

tjames that is too bad you did not have any luck. If you like you can PM me. Maybe I can be some help to you since a few of us have been out on Balsam.

Went out to Balsam again a few days ago.
Nice day and water has warmed up to 13C. Sunny and low wind conditions so fish was finicky during daytime but after 4 pm the pike turned on hungry and was smashing my jerkbaits pretty aggressively.
it's not a post-spawn agressive bite yet but their metabolism has improved and the bite is definitely picking up.
Got 8 pikes in 4-6 lb range (24-29" range)
The most challenging thing was to actually locate the fish as the weeds are still scarce. Find the weeds (the thicker the better) and you will likely find the pike.

Those are some nice pike and pictures JB. You always know where the pike are and how to get them to hit those jerk baits. I am trying to get up there next week, maybe run into you or reeling machine. Good luck out there, stay safe.

Some nice pike there JB. The pike don’t have a chance with you around. I hope to get on some Friday and this weekend along with the walleye. I will take some of your advise looking for the weeds and working those jerk baits.
