How far for the ball you run your lyman? I usually put 20 -30 ft back from the release behing a black ball.
This year we got 2 chrome 10 lb sharks. What is a good length with those? Should I run them closer?

I don't think you'll get a "mathematically correct" measurement for your lead. Generally speaking the length used will affect the action on the lure, but not a guarantee of success. Sometime fish will respond to a larger, less erratic motion of a longer lead; next time a shorter, more erratic motion of a shorter lead will trigger the bite. You'll have to experiment to find out what fish want on that day. Heck, we've run longer leads (up to 50') and shorter (15-20' ) at the same time with similar success rates....????

At one time most guys would use the "100" rule, if you were down 10 feet, then 90 feet behind the ball, 40 feet down, 60 feet behind the ball, and 90 feet down, 10 feet behind the ball. Not a hard and fast rule just a starting point.

I run them as short as 5 feet depending on time of year, water color and time of day

I guess the main rule there is no rule. I ve had good luck last septemver running the plug behind one locor lead on a mooching reel. One time a strike was so hard that when i grabbed the rodv fish ripped it from my hands but the reel got caught on the transom. Almost lost the shole thing.

When trolling shallow 20-30' depths I have run 125'-175' back with success. You just have to play around with it
