Organizing events such as this are always a lot of work with very little thanks , so before I begin I would like to thank John of "Happy Hooka " outdoor sports in collingwood and all his helpers for a derby well run

The derby was scheduled for Aug 17 and 18th , on arrival at 5 am on the Friday the decision had been made to call the event that day due to thunder storms and lump it in with the Sat event .. A few fools ventured out anyway with no regard for personal safety ( Have always said most fisher persons are a little off Yea we went out .."Grass hopper and I needed that time to sort a few equipment issues to be ready for the Sat ..but we did land one salmon and lose another..

I put "Grass hopper " up for the night and we were up bright ?? and early at 4am raring to go get the big ones .. Arrived at the launch and joined about 40 other boats wanting to get out , all was good , good 4 slip ramp and the guys were courteous and helpful ..

Blast off was 5:30n am , all 40 in the dark heading out after one of the top prizes in the derby .. We set lines at just b4 6 and the first hit came 15 minutes in ..nice salmon about 12 lbs , not long after "Grass Hopper " hits another about the same ...then a 2 hour lull .. we fished from 60-90 fow and moved quite a bit , weigh in for the derby was at 2:30 sharp ..our tally was 5 salmon from 15 lbs down .. waited as others had their fish entered and hoped ours just might take a placing.. Total weight 53 lbs .. heard the results announced Biggest trout a laker 20 lbs + "WOW' top salmon about the same then came the combined weights , they called 5th,4th,and 3rd hey maybe it just wasn't going to happen ...WHEN TEAM #11 as 2nd was called , hey that's us .. $900... "WOW"..

Followed by a tube steak lunch and a cold one ..

We had a great day , "Grass hopper " said the cables going under the boat , hey a salmon grabbed his lure ,pulled the 15 lb cannon ball under the boat and crossed my line , chinese fire drill..didnt work out but ...next time..

All fish were caught on spoons in 50-75 fow at 2.2-2.7 mph " Few pix to follow but I hope "Grass hopper" (Frank) will fill in with more of the fish and trophy ..

All in all good , good company , lots of cursing and a great ending ..

Dave

Salmon fishing is a team event and we make a good team , this spring we caught a ton of salmon and this fall is starting off great ....more reports to follow ...I hope ..

Hey Frank (Grass hopper) could you post a few of the best pix , the sending thing ain't working ..
