Hit lake O today with my son and father for some late season down rigging.
I have been trying to learn more about down rigging and this year has been good to me. I decided to go with the late season trip even though I don’t have a clue what the fish do this time of year.
We started in 110 FOW with nothing to show for it. We went deep to 280-320 FOW. We were running slow 2.2-2.5 MPH with not a sniff. We changed lures a dozen times and boards over and over. I pushed the speed up to 3 mph and we picked up a nice Coho. The whole day was about getting my son his first down rigging fish so he was on the rod all day. He ended up landing 3 Coho and lost two big fish I suspect were Lakers by the way they fought. On the way back in my son badly wanted a bigger fish so we stopped in 100 FOW and trolled at 3.2 MPH. I finally called it and cleared one rod and put it all away. I went to grab the second rod and wham it went off. My son got his wish and he fought the fish like a champ. He landed a nice Laker about 8lbs that was released for another day.
Even though I tried really hard to catch a fish on body baits all the fish came on spoons.
