Hey!

Iíll be at a cabin in two weeks where there is a healthy population of Round Whitefish. I have never caught one, although Iíve fished a few lakes that have them.

Does anyone know their habits? Tactics? Iím going to assume there are similarities in techniques used for Lake Whitefish and start there. Always interested in something different.

Cheers

Yeah I don't know much about them. I'd do like you say, and start off with things that work for lake whitefish. Smallest vibrato would be in my starting lineup.

Yep, I agree, Iíd go with what normally works for lake whitefish and patience number one since it sounds like paradise, not a lot of popular spots have round whitefish so Iíd just enjoy the solitude and challenge and relax. I wouldnít even hassle with live bait even if itís allowed there. Whitefish often hit with a reactionary bite just like trout but not as aggressive. Just sometimes the strike is the opposite of a tug, itís just slack. Really fun even with small northern whitefish especially when you have a few misses sitting beside another fisherman in the hut and finally hook one. Not going to say what would be my go to for actually hooking them, but itís popular and I would also have a small or medium vibrato down as an attractor unless they are already under the hut in numbers. Stick with it but donít just stick with the same bait and presentation! Also, pick a depth shallow enough for eyes if you are where I think you are, they might be close in depth in the winter.

Had to cancel the cabin trip. Looks like I wonít be going now... oh well, hereís hoping for next year.
Appreciate the advice! I may just head over there for a day trip as itís not far from me... although the real whitefish grounds wonít be long until theyíre ready....thatís the real grocery store!

Cheers
