This will be my 4th year downrigging and I've done pretty good later in the summer for salmon but only managed 2 salmon last year before july. I live in barrie and fish the collingwood area. Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to find salmon early in the season. Is it worth the drive to owen sound or over by christian island area? Or are they just harder to come by in the spring.

Find warm water.

Deep holes, sand flats, rivermouths or stained water. These places will typically hold the warmest water, bait and silver fish.

Very long leads, small body baits or small bright spoons and sloooow down.

Thank you for the tip. Hopefully be able to get out soon and do some searching. Itching to get the boat out of storage and on the lake

I used to go to Kincardine and used to fish out by the Bruce nuclear plant this time of year and would get my limit in a few hours of salmon rainbows and browns. If you have to drive anyway it’s worth the trip
