After quite a number of years "camping" in extreme cold weather with CF, I can tell you insulation between the sleeping bag and the ground or lawn chair/camp cot is one of the most important things to do. We survived a week of -40 to -50C in northern AB back in the 80's.

Now that is cold, my cousins son works on the big machinery all the way up north anywhere in Canada in those extreme cold places, but he sleeps in a heated building. Camping in those temperatures would be too much for me to try.

I would be freezing even if I slept inside a bonfire in those temperatures lol. 110%, having a sleeping pad, even though it was thin and meant for summer, really helped through the night. I will be looking into even better insulation next time.

A good 6-8 inch thick air mattress is good, put a beach towel between the mattress and sleeping bag to absorb your sweat, you would be surprised how much a body sweats. Hang your bag up to dry during the day.

Last winter my kids got bored and built a shelter out of pine boughs and slept out in -14 weather . They stayed out the whole night and said it was quite comfortable even though their shelter tried to fall down in the middle of the night. ‘‘Twas a good adventure “they said. One of the positive things to come out of Covid boredom.

It's nice they chose the outdoors to have some fun. I hope to survive a night in something like that but have a long way to go. Your kids are already next level winter campers.

During Covid the outdoors has been their go to when they get bored. We have fifty acres to camp in across the road from our house so if things got miserable they could always walk home. This helps their mother sleep at night!

Good to see the kids go out for a bit of an adventure and learn to cope with nature.
