Definitely thought of this myself. I was thinking Callander as a starting point. As rayray said, live bait 100% , after that it’s walk ... drill , repeat till you find the structure/ fish your looking for. It would be a learning experience for sure. If you do head out, I’d be interested in hearing how ya make out... good luck out there.

If not this year next year you should try and book with an operator. By the time you rent a hotel room, purchase bait and all the extra work of walking out and trying to figure out the lake it may cost you about the same to rent from an operator and have them transport you out to a bungalow for a couple of days or they also offer cottages on shore and transport you out to day huts for the day. We fished Thursday noon to Sunday noon, minnows included for under 300.00 Cdn. each this year....so what's that about 200.00 US each We also book 8 man bungalows for 4 guys for the extra room so there is a slight upcharge for this but if you put more in the bungalow the price will go down.
Lots of great operators listed at the top of the page but I would book early, like maybe September, to ensure you get something. A lot of us have already booked for next year when we came off the ice this year.

Ya operators sound great but I know the reality of fishing sometimes you have to move to find fish. And I just want to be mobile, thanks for the thought though.

You can always base yourselves out of a bungalow and then go mobile from there. These bungalows are set up on proven fishing grounds and it will save you a couple mile walkout to get out there.

Callander Bay is a good place for you. There is a boat launch on Landsdowne st. Not a lot of Motels right there but you can get something in North Bay and that is about 10km away. It may even be possible to drive your vehicle out on the ice. I have in previous years but have not been up this year. I would suggest to click the link on Hut operators and look where they are headed out of and that will give you a better idea.

Thanks for the input everyone!!! Now you got me thinking about staying on the ice, I’m leaning towards The comforts of a hotel though, as I’m going to be by myself on this trip. But I’m still debating it. Do the ice huts have power?

most run their lights etc off a battery, but you can get a generator if you need more power
