I recently came back from spending a week at the cottage on Sturgeon lake with my family and we had a very good time there. We rented a jetski for one day from Bobcaygeon so the kids and wifey had fun with it. I just rode it with wifey for about 15 km from the rental place to the cottage going through one lock , which was fun but that was good enough for me as I wanted to spend more time what I enjoy the most – fishing.
And Sturgeon did not disappoint (again).
First outing on the second day of the stay was a blast: I got 4 walleyes in the afternoon and a musky cut off my jig as I did not have a leader as I were fishing exclusively for walleye but when hungry musky is around no lure is safe. Changed my set up and tied a metal leader going forward. The other few days was on and off with occasional walleyes and Sm bass here and there but nothing worth of bragging about.
The weather was excellent the whole week so spent some time with family swimming, tubing the kids behind the boat, sitting by the campfire, playing board games (there was no WIFI in the cottage – hurray!), doing some short daily trips to Fenelon Falls, Bobcaygeon and Peterborough.
The last couple of days of the trip (mid-week) was good fishing with few decent walleyes caught and last day (after a cooler night) was a blast with 4 walleyes and 3 musky (30”, 34” and 38”) caught in one day (in two trips in the am and also pm).
Musky were fun to pull out with lots of running around and jumping. The walleyes were also giving a good fight in the warm water, so had lots of fun playing them.
Medium sized jerkbaits in 3.5-4.5” range for walleye and 5-7” for musky fished in the weeds and along the weedline in 9-11 FOW worked best for me. Muskies were mainly caught outside but not too far from the weedbeds in 10-11 FOW (one around 8.30 am and two around 5-6 pm).
