My son and I caught two sheepshead (local lingo for fresh water drum) literally back to back this week. His was 21 inches long and a pretty good fight for an 11 year old! Mine, as seen in the picture, was 29 inches and an awesome fight. We didn't measure the girth, but I figure around 24 inches (an estimation), which would put the fish at around 20 pounds.

Those big sheep head are fighters, well worth it for me. We catch a couple every time we go to this one river trolling for pickerel. We have actually stopped and backed up thinking we were stuck. But that is bigger I believe then the ones we been getting. I plan on keeping a couple next time and try smoking them.

LOL.. Years and Years ago the first time we hooked up a drum on Nip we thought we had the world record bass on the line.. but then things went off script.... It tore off line and stayed down... Finally a flash in the water followed by a what the hell is that line... and a picture ...and a google search...
All said and done they are a great catch and scrap for kids and a serious test of your light rod and reel....

Congrats on the correct hold for a water goat (local lingo). Positioning of the lower hand is critical. Only the lord knows why they need such a big poop shoot.

Let us know how that goes. I filleted one before, and it was disappointing. Very little meat for the size of the fish. Lots of it needs to be trimmed too (fatty).
The meat had a strange consistency - almost between coconut and fish.

Nice fish for sure. Congrats.
Several years ago I was going to try and eat one and found there is a large number of recipes online. They are still printed off at camp stuck to the side of the fridge:
