The black flies are starting to emerge. In my yard they aren't bad but in the bush there are a wack. They don't seem to be biting too badly yet. Time to get out the bug nets.

I'm on the South Shore. Black Flies and Mosquitos both are just getting going. More annoying then biting fir black flies and mosquitos are biting. Hopefully cool night last night did a little damage but there is a lot of standing water that will fester those annoying bugs..... Worst is yet to come.

How long does the bite last once it starts? Heading up to the south shore in a couple weeks and want to prepare as best I can for the flies. Curious if by the 16th it will be in the thick of it, or things will begin to taper off?

Hard to say as it depends on the weather and how much precipitation we get. This link explains their life cycle pretty well.
Saturday they were out and hungry but it was cool enough to cover up. Sunday was windy so they were not that bad.

Light colour clothing will help and keep your skin covered up if the weather allows...my black fly bite count was 7..I get a good lump on the skin from the little pricks but they really only started the day I left where I was in Marten River..
