Heading up to Matheson for easter and was planning on bringing my gear to tackle Abitibi again. Just curious if anyone has been up the way and can report on the road in (heading up Munro) and if the shoreline is still standing strong.

Heading there tomorrow via Munro. Will let you know. Was there 2 weeks ago and road in was great and shoreline was fine. There was a large pressure crack/ridge to the right when you get on the ice at the end of the trail but other than avoiding that no issues.

No slush 2 weeks ago either.

Thanks,

If you are from Matheson do you know if Tannys still has minnows in stock and if not do you know of anywhere to get some?

Sorry, not from Matheson. Just got back in the door from a weekend on the lake. We got our minnows from Pro Tackle in Timmins.

Road was drifted in about 10 km from the pavement so was not able to make to the 20 km mark where we usually park. Turned the truck and trailer around and rode the sleds in from there. 10 km on the road and than 8 more on the bush trail to the lake. Shoreline was 100% yesterday. Ice thickness was anywhere from 18 inches to 27 inches with about 5 feet of water below the ice.

MNR had check points set up on the road both Saturday and Sunday.

Snow was 10 to 18 inches deep on the lake with larger drifts. About 2 or 3 inches of slush on the bottom of the snow pack. Not an issue as snow above was dense enough to prevent breaking through.

I guess the million-dollar question is was the fishing worth a ~20km snowmobile ride into the lake?

If you catch fish, the answer is always yes!

Was worth it for us. PB hardwater pike, limits on walleye, ling and about 20 goldeye for the smoker. All that being said met a number of people on road at the end of the day on Sunday that were either skunked or just 1 or 2 fish.

Not sure what we doing different. Used 1/4 oz jig heads tipped with dace minnows. Slow gentle jigging

Never heard of someone smoking the mooneyes/goldeneyes, going to have to try it. I was torn about staying south (near Lake Erie) or making the run to the north to hit Abitibi one last time for winter, guess it will be a game-day decision. Thanks for the report.
