Our spring trip was a little different this year because we couldn’t go into Algonquin backcountry so we planned day trips instead.
Day 1 was into an old favourite of ours on a gorgeous spring day with light winds and sunny skies and very few bugs. We split up in two different canoes and portaged in almost 5 kilometres . I hooked the first trout around 14 inches but my daughter bested me immediately with an 18 inch plus trout. My brother also caught a trout in the 18 inch range while casting a small spoon. The other boat had no bites but we enjoyed a great shore lunch on an island. As we prepared lunch a short rain storm blew through giving us a quick soaking but the sun popped out and dried us up in half an hour.
The afternoon went by with no further action.
Day 2 was into a new lake that I’ve wanted to try for a few years. It was a beautiful portage in and great looking trout water. We ringed the lake with no bites but the other canoe landed two fish including the big fish winner at 19.25 inches. Another great shore lunch at a beautiful campsite before we worked our way out.
On the paddle out we stopped at some rapids and caught a few 12 to 14 inch fish at the base of the rapids and near some log jams.
