The Ministry of Natural Resources is considering an extension to the bass fishing season in Zone 17 (Peterborough and the Kawartha Lakes).
The plan would see the season start earlier, on the third Saturday in June, and run until Dec. 15. The season currently begins on the fourth Saturday in June. Similar changes are being considered in two other zones in Ontario.
MNR information officer Jamie Prentice issued a notice stating largemouth and smallmouth bass in the area are abundant, offering good fishing. This may be caused by earlier spring warming trends, Prentice reported, leading to earlier spawning dates.
The MNR is looking for public input on the change.
To learn more and to find out how to provide input on the decision, visit ontario.ca/zonecouncils and click on the link for FMZ 17, or complete the online survey at www.FMZ17survey.ca. The deadline to provide input is May 30.

I'd like to see this but with a catch and release only for that extra week... I don't think too many people keep bass anyway, but with the odd bass still on beds... would be easy targets for those that do. I'd rather see them extend the season to the end of December... lakes aren't frozen yet and very few people fishing.
