My brother ,son and myself decide to try for whitefish and lakers this weekend. We went to the Sportsmen show on Friday and drove up to the cottage after that. We setup two tents to fish out of because the forecast called for rain and we wanted to cover some different areas. My son got first fish after an hour or so,an average whitefish. Action was slow but steady during the day with some fish caught on spreaders and some caught jigging. I caught a whitefish on a jigging rap one minute after putting it down a new hole. I had this happen again while I was hole hopping but lost the fish. With the rain and warm temps old holes were opening up so I kept jigging around a mid lake hump. I missed a couple fish as well during the day. We ended up with two lake trout and three whitefish between us. We had a fresh whitefish supper to end the day.
Sunday morning we were back at it in the same spot. We watched sticks while it was raining and jigged when the rain stopped. My brother got the first whitie on a spreader. I jogged up a 4.5 pound laker in one of the lulls in the rain. It was slippery and windy today with cleats being a big help. My son is slight so when it got windy enough it could actually blow him along the ice when he wasn’t wearing cleats! My brother and I have a bit more ballast and faired better in the wind.
My daughter joined us for an hour and landed a nice whitefish on a vibrato.(thanks Flukes) We ended up with four whitefish and a laker today.Hers aces pics.

I am sure if she catches a few more WF (and lakers) on the vibrato, she will start out fishing the sticks So far, this year (when I have used minnows), it's been about 5 to 1 for the vibrato vs. minnows. Only one fish (laker) was caught on a minnow this year (I think I have used minnows on 5 or 6 trips so far this year). I never used minnows when fishing from a kayak - just too much trouble to bring along and the rules are a bit crazy now too. I had gotten some minnows for some newbies hoping that it would make it easier for them but they never showed up so I have been trying to use them up before the 2 week limit. Enjoy the WF meals!

Nicely done Bill! Clearly you're doing something right for those whitefish. Sportsmen's Show followed by fishing at the cottage sounds like an ideal weekend.
