Yes it’s gross and yes unacceptable.
People would be shocked this was super common and still is in many communities with aging infrastructure. Many don’t have their rain water and sewage separate and many with rain event flush raw sewage into our water ways.

More 'revelations of infrastructure problems' in Hamilton is the lynchpin for Horwath stalling Fords 'Greenbelt development'. Injunctions soon to follow. I hope the Lake benefits in the long run.....

Happens often in TO during the summer whenever there is a big rainfall. They still have combined water and sewage systems.
About 23% of Toronto is still combined sewer systems from what info I can find on the cities web site. They absolutely have over flow events during heavy rainfall and spring melts.

crap show going on down there, how many 10's of millions spent down there cleaning it up. I would love to see them start a program down there, sinking Christmas trees with blocks..

It seems odd but this is very common throught ontario. London bypasses raw sewage if the treatmemt plant cant keep up during large storms or flooding. Alot of houses as many have said do not have proper infrastructure and when everything is running properly they still have an allowable tollerance for dumping raw sewage into the rivers and lakes.

Let's hope it stalls these GreenBelt plans. Urban sprawl is terrible for the system. It dumps all the sewage created by rain and snow directly into our sewer systems instead of letting it filter back into the ground and help wetlands or let plants grow like they should.. He's an idiot we should be building more up instead out outwards. Like higher density is what we need not just taking more land to build.

Sorry your info isn’t up to date. New subdivisions and industrial buildings do not have all the rain water and run off dumped into our sewer systems. New construction has a separate rain water and melt systems from wastewater sewer systems. There are also settling ponds now required for all new development. It’s old well established homes and industrial building that are the issue. They have single systems that do dump all sewage and run off into the same system.
In addition the proposed green belt would GROW in size with Fords current plans. Somehow most people miss the GROW part. Taking a thousand hectares and adding 1500 hectares.

Ok yeah I know about the settling ponds and that for new subdivisions and I'm aware the storm runoff just doesn't get piped directly into the lakes, like it used to, but it doesn't go naturally back into the system. If you pave over something it will concentrate the water into one specific area. And that can cause flooding can it not ? And the greenbelt is supposed to be a contiguous tract of land not something looking like patchwork. There are buffer zones that will hold the animals when they come out of their habitat - like some of the farms they are planning on developing. And what they want is just to have a neighbourhood beside something like a protected forest where there are animals that were used to grazing on that field. I just think there is another way of building living spaces that would pollute less all - around.

Yes paving over large area can cause flooding but that’s what the settling ponds are for. Also this thread was about sewage flowing directly into our rivers and lakes which new storm water development does not add to at all. Your points on development of the green belt still doesn’t address MORE land will be protected for all those animals that require natural places. Farm land is horrible for winter grazing. With modern farm equipment they harvest so efficiently their is little to nothing left behind for the winter months which are the hardest times for all those grazing creatures. I would rather see tracks of currently unprotected forests add to the green belt than them cut down to build houses. From what I can read about proposed lands to be developed none are forested areas.
