Detroit River, Gettting ready

Today is the day I'm getting my plastics and jigs ready, also making some stinger hooks. If this cold and windy weather lets up I will be ready to go.

That magnifying glass is a great idea. Also that green/yellow plastic bait would go nice on a pink jig head, and so would the white one. I am assuming you use those for walleye. Good luck when you get out. Stay safe.

yes walleye fishing. I can't even see the holes in the beads with out the magnifying glass. Pink plastic is my go to colour. I try lots of colours, but seem to always come back to pink. used to be white the go to, and before that green. Seems like one colour with be good for a couple years then it switches. I'm making my own stingers this year as I have had troubles with the store bought ones. Buddy turned me on to making my own, he says they work much better and you can make them the correct length of your plastic. So I have made 3 different lengths, short, med for 4" plastics and long for the plastic worms.

May i ask what the bead is for? Is it a glow bead in front of the jig? My friends and i have been talking about going to Windsor for the walleye run. We've never been and we're fishing from shore. Any tips would be much appreciated. Thnx.

No the beads are for making the stinger hooks. the bead makes the loop that goes over the hook. Makes it ease the put on and take off. Once loop is over hook just pull on trebble hook to tighten, then to remove just pull on bead to loosen. in the picture you can see the black bead by the hook and the red trebble hook in the tail of plastic. Making them is the way to go I hope as you can make them the correct length for the plastic.

As far as shore fishing goes I'm have no experience as I'm a boater, but the guys on shore do well at least some of them that know what they are doing or where to go. I believe they just juse a jig and plastic, what size I don't know.

looks good and a simple technique.....i also have found the stinger hooks bought from tackle shops lacking in certain things,,


some of the newer type have a red plastic in the front to go over your hook but it can wear out quickly and cause the stinger to slip off when playing a fish.........I know from past bad experiences

I was wondering if these stinger hooks get into the gills of the fish, or rip the outside of the gill plate when retrieving a fish, or damage the eyes of a fish? I do not use stinger hooks, so this is a question. When I catch a fish I just pop out the jig and let it go or keep it. Wouldn't a stinger hook cause more damage to a fish as apposed to a single jig head.

crappeeman I would agree with you and will only use them when the fish are short biting, which they don't do all the time. I don't like using them when the fish are hitting hard as it takes to much time to get them unhooked, but when they are short striking makes all the difference. Now if I was fishing where there was a slot size I probably wouldn't use them for the reasons mentioned by crappeeman.

Thank you for the reply. The two lakes I fish being Balsam and Sturgeon both have slot sizes. I have been very lucky in the past 15 to 20 years, only killing 8 or 9 fish that should have been released. A couple on jigs, and a couple on crank baits, none on jerk baits. The walleye in this picture should have been released. At about 14 inches it was way too skinny to keep, but it lost way to much blood. Both fish caught on the same crank bait. No matter how careful I am, sometimes a fish does not make it back into the lake to grow bigger.

I have been switching out my treble hooks on my spoons and body baits I use in Erie to double hooks. User to get hooks out and less damage. I have a personal size limit walleye need to be min 15" no bigger than 21". Unless of course a fish is damaged than it is kept as part of my limit. I have kept one that was about 6" that was on a worm harness. I'd love to catch my limit of 18"ers that the perfect size. Anyway good luck out there, time is almost on use. I tried for cappie Wednesday but was muddy and cold. I have never caught a crappie

Good luck to you as well. If you are ever around Pt. Pelee there is amazing crappie fishing there.

I usually fish in June for walleye west of the point out of leamington winds permitting. My boat isn't the best for really big water as it has a flat bottom. But I got her uncovered today and all checked over, ready for her first trip to the rivers.

I have launched at the city marina, chewit, but that one is hit or miss for space to park, Lassal. Once the fish are in full swing will get fish not far from any of them. It still a little early, there are fish there, but have to find the small pockets now and river is dirty. Friends were out yesterday and got 6 and froze there butts, but at least they got a few. I tend to wait until they are in there thick as it is a long drive for me. If I lived in Windsor I'd be there fishing now as a couple better then sitting at home.
