Even the smaller lakes are sketchy or open water, read the posts on a similar question about lake of bays. There's a link to satellite pics there. Even Nipissing sounds a bit sketchy reading the posts there. The muskoka lakes haven't froze over yet so there is no reason why there would be ice now after plus temps. I've heard people are fishing on cook's bay on 3" of ice if you feel like going for a swim! They are nuts and I bet that ice is gone or will be after tonight's wind of 50km. Couchiching is or was froze over and I've seen a pop up in the middle, but that doesn't mean it's safe, especially at the top where it flows out and near the narrows at Simcoe. Some small northern back lakes might be ok, but you could still be walking on 6'' that turns into 1-2" where it froze later but then it warmed up and never made more ice.

These are the people who get their info from Facebook or the forum. They never go to check the ice for themselves.

I'm fishing on 2" of good clear ice under 5" of crap and slush and walking past opened up holes and you want me to tell people it's good to go and kill people? I look forward to your enlightening report when you make it back. Maybe you need to check the ice for yourself with your eyes open. It's funny when visitors try to tell locals when the ice is safe! Everyone be careful and never listen to anyone on the internet!!

Same every year. People give their observations, others don't like them. There's a lake near me that's only 6 feet deep, and I'm sure you could drive a truck out. 5km away there's Skeleton lake, which looks wide open on a satellite image a day or two ago.

So who's right? Is it safe ice in Muskoka or not? Depends where you go of course! You can't just say that lakes are safe in Muskoka. Saying they're not safe isn't true either, but it's best to err on the side of caution and maybe prevent disaster.

yesterday, I fished where there's 4 1/2" ice. Bottom 2" is clear ice, the top part, garbage....when I walk up to the holes, the water is rising and falling with each step. I can jump nearby and water overflows from the holes....so to me, just safe enough for humans, and it's not solid enough (or just too risky)to wander aimlessly around the lake. So, then this guy comes on the ice with atv. Does a circle on the lake, and I guess with his ice-measuring, laser x-ray vision decides its good enough to hold, so he goes and hooks up a sleigh and then drives well out onto the lake. His friend tells me they've been on small speck lakes recently. Well, ***news flash***...a medium size Muskoka lake trout lake with close to 100 feet of water doesn't have the same ice as a smaller, likely shallower specky lake. I told his friend I personally wouldn't be driving around on my atv out there, and promptly got the heck outta there to avoid getting involved in a rescue mission.

Safe or not? I don't know. I stopped giving recommendations a few years ago when guys from out of town knew more than me.

Triggered...I don't remember mentioning your name or quoting you so...

My friend, I did go and I personally checked ice on some of the lakes you mentioned being wide open...so clearly you have not been out there and you are just assuming so spare me.

I'm not encouraging anyone to go out and I didn't mention any lakes so take a chill pill.

To each their own. You will not find safe ice sitting on your couch.
With the temperatures we had, I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised to find ice on some lakes I was not expecting it. Also other lakes are wide open.

Tight lines for who is not afraid to explore a bit. If you decide to go, Go with a friend, spud every step.

Yes and no. Have a look.

Things get a little confusing when using the term Muskoka. Is it a lake, a region, a group of three or four big lakes? Rest assured, that you can find good ice, open water, and everything in between depending on where you look.
