Hello,

I am wondering if anyone is willing to share some tactics when it comes to whitefish, i am fishing inland lakes so the simcoe goby approach does not work imop. I am also wondering how you go about choosing water to pursue them, what depth, what kind of bottom configuration and if the lake is the same bottom structure throughout what do you do?

I have no caught a whitefish in some years now, i am quite new to the style of fishing. I have found some areas where i have seen them swimming by the aquaview but with no interest in the bait presentation.

Heres to hoping someone can help me out,

cheers.

For whitefish on lakes other than simcoe I have had good success with very small minnows on very small jigs. Keep it a foot or two off bottom, jigging or tapping bottom occasionally to get their attention. When you see one come in on the sonar and start to rise towards the minnow, do a very very slow lift away from them. The slow lift usually triggers a bite and also helps you detect their very light bite. Rods with sensitive tips are helpful. What has also worked well for me are small, slender spoons like Swedish pimples tipped with a small piece of minnow using the same technique, jig/tap bottom to get attention, deadstick it a foot or two off bottom, when they come in slowly lift away. If they are being super picky sometimes using flies works well. If you are seeing them on your camera then you are already in the right spot, just need to fine tune your presentation. If you put some chum down it usually keeps them around longer. Hope this helps, good luck!

Using a tip up set up also works well,, sitting a spreader with a few minows to the ground.

the bite will usually raise your tip up upwards as they lift the bait off the ground,, so set the front of the tip up sloping downwards towards the water (unlike when fishing for perch where you set it up straight so that it goes down when the perch take the bait).

Once you see that tip up go up or raise towards you,, lift and pull that line up.

Good luck & dont forget to post the results !
