Managed to get out on the kayak today. Had a slow start to the day partly my own fault as I slept through my alarm and didn’t get on the water until after 7am. I was hoping to be on the water by sunrise.

Started fishing some areas I had luck recently, but couldn’t buy a bite. Decided to let the winds push me towards another area I’ve done well at and cast while drifting. Turned out to be a good decision as I managed a really nice smallie in a spot I wouldn’t normally fish. First bite and fish - just after 8:30am. Came on a 3 inch swim bait. This one was definitely overweight. It tried to jump 3 times and each time barely got more than half of itself out of the water.

Overall was a pretty tough day of fishing. My numbers were lower than normal and I had to move around a lot for the fish I got, but the size was better than normal. Most looked more like fall football smallies - bulked up for winter.

Only smallies for me on this trip.

Off the water and headed home around 3pm.

Fair amount of boat traffic and fisherman out, but I didn’t see many boated fish. I had a chuckle watching one other boat - saw one guy hook and fight 2 bass in quick succession. Both fish were fought and brought boat side for his buddy to net and both came off right at the net. Did not look pleased with the net work - thought he might have to swim back to shore. Saw the same boat later in the day and both were still in the boat and dry...

Nice fish. I'd take a slow day with that fish any day of the week. Did you get a weight on it?

I don’t carry a scale and didn’t bring my bump board to get an accurate measurement.

Nice fish. Interestingly, I was getting lots ~2lb that day. Most of them in the afternoon.
