QUOTE (randaller @ Jan 12, 2019 - 12:34 pm)
No offence taken to the people thinking I'm nuts. Everyone has a different definition of what constitutes safe ice. I checked 3 spots all together yesterday before I found what I define as safe ice. This time of year it is a calculated risk that can be lessened by taking your time and spudding every step, I mean every step, never fishing alone and keeping ice picks on you at all times.

All that being said, I was on over 4" of ice and felt very comfortable.

Good luck to everyone heading out this weekend, I will be back out on Monday after the crowds leave.

nice haul

everyone has a personal comfort zone and everyone has different ice experience

Lol. Shield? Randaler had a good day on ice he thought was safe. He was nice enough to share his story with us. No reason to bring personal opinions into it.

Whether it's nutty or not, crazy or not, and whatever your opinion on what safe ice is, one thing is true, at least for me, no fish is worth taking a risk, calculated or not. I'd definitely wait till the commercial operators put their huts out before hitting whitey grounds. Even if you don't care about your life, think about your family and kids before taking the first step on thin ice.

And there is nothing wrong with that approach!

We ventured out pretty far, but could not find safe passage to 60+.

Itís always tempting to push a bit further... until you punch a hole and the ice is half as thick as the last one you cut 20 feet before. Lol

Soon enough!

Great catches!
