It has long been a dream of a good friend of mine to paddle Quetico Provincial Park and so beginning August 4, he and his wife and I spent 13 days in the park: 2 canoes, 7 lakes, 13 portages, 92 kilometres, and lots of fish! We enjoyed lovely campsites, beautiful vistas, relatively few bugs, and, with the exception of persistent headwinds, incredibly good weather. Despite the 1563 km. trip one way from Toronto to Atikokan, it was a trip well worth making.

In pleasant contrast to many more southerly lakes, it was relatively easy to locate and catch fish on every body of water that I fished. Bass, walleye, pike, and even a nice laker were more than willing to cooperate. In fact, on more than one occasion, I had fish swiping at my crankbait dangling at the water's surface from my canoe.

While I had a good assortment off hard and soft baits -- one can never have too many! -- virtually all of the fish were caught on a Berkley Pitbull 5.5 (honey shad) or a Ned rig (Z Man Finesse TRD in the mud minnow colour).
